Real Monsters Shadow

Monsters:

The Gromble: The Gromble is the head of The Monsters Academy. Personality-wise, he's a lot like his voice, wafting effortlessly from sweet, angry, sinister and mocking. The Gromble generally sees everything and is very hard to keep secrets from. He actually seems fairly protective of his students, but only as long as they are scaring well. Terms of endearment include "scab-scratchers", "maggots", and "nose-pickers"

One of his favourite methods for showing displeasure is to inhale the student through the nose or mouth and eject them via the same orifice a few sentences later, or perhaps using the student to floss, In one episode he forbid the students from going scaring on Halloween because they'd been performing badly. Ickus, Krumm and Oblina were the only ones to disobey (all the other monsters chickened out) and he congratulated them on their monstrous spirit - then because they'd disobeyed him he gave them a choice between three "disciplines", SOMETHING BAD (a big steaming pressure cooker type thing), SOMETHING REALLY BAD (some kinda teethy metal thing) and YOU DON'T WANNA KNOW (a cute looking little house with a welcome mat).

Alternatively, there's always the trash compactor - oh sure, it's fun the first time ...

The Snortch: The Snortch is the Academy's very own torturer. Big and rather stupid, the Snortch deals with all the really unpleasant student discipline. He's also pretty good at surfing. All students live in fear of being "Snortched" which quite often seems to involve opera ...

The Snortch doesn't talk coherantly at all and the one-legged fly thing (Zimbo) on top of it's head generally translates the grunts and mumbles.

Students:

Krumm: Ickus' best mate. Krumm's speciality is stinking. His father's a mould farmer. Krumm loves to eat and is scared of heights.

Oblina: Ickus' other friend. Oblina transforms well. Talks well. A bit bossy, she's normally the one that push, push, pushes Ickus into doing things he's scared of. Oblina seems to be the oldest of the three.

Other Students: Gumm; Snil; Pugh; Yutz; Blib; Frunk; Galoth; Vlorana; Gludge; Jigger; Footoo; Snav; Borl; Merf; Kriggle; Dootch; Friggit; Worfle; Corpus; Greltch and Izzit (to name a few).

Terminology:

Grishmik: Actually I don't know what a Grishmik is, but apparently The Gromble isn't playing with the full Grishmik (abuse) ....

Gorblat: Gorblat is a game much like bowling, but they use Gorblats (like squishy sea-urchins. You throw the Gorblat and then jump on it, hoping that what shoots out of it's mouth hits the pins (which are sentient to one degree or another).

Skankum: Skankum appears to be some kind of liquid ... I don't know what though. (possibly an alternative to water - though I have seen Ickus take a shower in what seemed to be monster-pig sweat) (The GM decided Skankum was an alcoholic beverage).

Pool of Ancestors: The pool of ancestors must maintain a certain level, otherwise monsters start disappearing - youngsters first. As long as enough people are scared of monsters, the pool will flourish ...

Toenails: Toenails are used as currency (human toenails) apparently fingernails are worthless. Other items of value are carpet lint, bellybutton fluff, rats etc ...

Ickus:

Ickus' main reactions to anything upsetting, painful, scary, or otherwise unknown tend to generally fall into three main categories.

1) get whiney

2) get sarcastic

3) get violent and/or destructive.

He interchanges these reactions with little or no warning. Confidence-wise his gauge tends to read full or zero - hasn't learnt the meaning of moderation yet, obviously. A rather predominant emotion is jealousy - he can be a stroppy little git when he wants to be.

As for Ickus' mother, so far there has been no mention of her (maybe she was that earwax-dripping thing next to Slickis at The Great Wave?). It might be better to leave it as a moot point since there's another series on the way ... I'll update the screamsheet as I go. (His mother turns out to be The Pool Of Ancestors - itherwise known as The Unicorn.)

The Glass-Shattering scream has been positively tracked down to Ickus rather than the other two. Whether or not this only works in Toon shadows I'll leave up to you ... if it works elsewhere, a range might be appropriate.

Ickus seems to be a great respecter of power, not just exhibiting fear, but also great admiration for anyone who weilds such. He's certainly not against sucking up either ...

While he has a yellow streak a mile wide, when the going gets tough, Ickus will fight back. Bit like a cornered rat really (grin). Once he's decided someone is a friend he'll take risks for them too.

From the way Oblina and Krumm talk, it would appear that Ickus is the youngest of the three. Also, Ickus' favourite food is garbage, specifically fanbelts and tyres. He's very fond of styrofoam for decor - it's so versatile.

Lore:

It's official, monsters don't eat humans (you never know where they've been) ... they do, however, eat each other occasionally.

For some reason, which is way beyond my capacity to fathom, monsters love lava lamps - it practically mesmerises them. Krumm likened a lava lamp to his mother and even Ickus was willing to take all sorts of risks just to get one - I've been told that The Lamp makes a re-appearance in the new series and is used by Simon the Monster Hunter to capture them - wouldn't be hard, you just turn it on and they gawp at it saying "it's wonderous!"

Internally, monsters seem to be fairly resistant. They can keep things inside them and retreive them by sticking their hand down their throats. The Gromble insists on several occasions that everything comes from deep inside; good transformations, howls, etc ... just think ugly and reach.

Reproduction:

Reproduction is conducted as follows. Put the elbow on the knee, then put your thumb on your nose with the fingers extended. Then straighten up, wave the hand and touch fingertips. The resulting blob will shake and shed it's caccoon in thirty days time - some species will eat absolutely anything and anyone in its path for the first 24 hours after caccoon shedding. I'm not clear on how long it takes for the blob to form in the first place, or where it forms. For the sake of my sanity, I shall assume that it forms in the mother and she throws it up when the time is right or something ... (My GM decided that the blob formed between the fingers of the two mating.)
